Our third and final amazing CMJ party took place at Cameo and was wiiiild. Sensual girl-duo Zambri blew my mind, followed by the frantic and crazy funkiness of Born Gold, rounded out by good-vibing freak folkers Delicate Steve. Other bands that played the show were Prussia, North Highlands, and Dinosaur Bones.

So, I think we can all agree that the Warehouse party got a little out of control (in the best way). Huge thanks to all the bands who played the show- Celestial Shore, Lands and Peoples, Heaven's Gate, Jeff Kessel, Night Manager, Black Girls, Secret Mountains, and Tiberius for putting on a downright awesome show. Also, amazing light installation from Andrew Thomas. We ended the night with shots of georgi and epic R&B dance party that was both unforgettable and really hard to recall.

Black Girls from Richmond are versatile and funky. Sometimes they channel the creepy-yet-beautiful vibes of indie masters like Modest Mouse ("Devil Out There") and others they sound like a soulful Sly and the Family Stone mixed with modern funk like Maroon 5 ("Get Off"). Whichever way they come, they bring an incredible stage presence and jammed out with the audience!

Secret Mountains, how you intrigue me. You've got that neo-gothic Portishead vibe going on, laced with clear and delicate vocals, but then again, you're so psychadelic. You've been reviewed by the NY Times but still remain totally obscure. You rock really hard but then you shoegaze away. You're great, that's all.

Tiberius, ending the night in noise rock ambience that blended lots of rock genres- prog, post-rock, experimental. Think of a darker and more concise Explosions in the Sky. They jammed out hard and brought the crowd to a whole new level.

Bushwick Walkabout Festival Photos!

Our long-awaited Bushwick Walkabout Festival this past weekend at BK Fireproof East was simply magnificent- the music sweet, the friends sweaty, and the beer free. Thanks to everyone who came out and of course all of the bands that made this festival happen in the first place. Here are photos from the weekend.

Friday:

Camden rocked out all the way from Boston with vocally-driven tracks that were both raw and lush.

Beast Make Bomb : Thanks to these BK locals for taking the crowd on a musical rollercoaster with rock'n'roll riffs and beachy, almost-spoken vocals, bringing a refreshing lo-fi level to this otherwise very rock-oriented showcase.

Grandchildren: Super intricate soundscapes, layer upon layer of emotionally-laden melodies and riffs. Philly Reps Grandchildren extinguished any doubt the neighbors night have had that this festival would stay on the quite side.

The Toothaches: Filling in for the (now) broken-up Arpline, The Toothaches' no-apologies-offered-punk-pop brought Friday night to its peak in a frenzy of percussion, synth, layered harmonies, amazing energy and a whole lot of facepaint.

Saturday!

Wowser Bowser's memorable set was one of the most fun of the weekend. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia just for the weekend, their DIY-sound combines delicate vocal melodies and racing percussion with outrageous stage presence, an awesome trumpet player, and BALLOONS!

Incredible set from an incredible Brooklyn band, Slam Donahue. Garage-style beats, floaty synth melodies and rhythmic and whiney vocals, these guys are catchy enough to get stuck in your head all week. Kinda like a 90s song... except in a non-guitly way.

Headless Horseman The ultimately-experimental duo sounded great towards the end of the night with their lo-fi approach, tricky rhythms, and airy falsetto chorals. Facing each other as if eating a meal together, they served up some fine glitchy pop songs.

CAMDEN - VALE EP

Big fan of the VALE EP from Boston quintet Camden. First time hearing their sound, I was sure it was the product of a kid prodigy, synthesizing youthful beats and bouncy hooks in his basement with loads of electronic toys, time, and a good ear for production.

Seeing Camden live, I was pleased to find out that they're actually a solid 5 piece outfit,not one synthesizer, even more entertaining in person than what I imagined on the record. Happy ending -- everyone danced. Listen to the record. Get the songs in your head. See them live.

Catch Camden at the BirdDog CMJ Showcase @ Pianos (upstairs lounge) -- playing right after a little band named Baths! Get there early.

Heard they don't really play shows that much, just house parties. That should put things in perspective.
